Iceland is a beautiful country full of colorful culture, extraordinary scenery, and endless adventures. I have already written a travel guide on what to do in Iceland, but I got the most questions about what I wore! Our crazy adventures included horseback riding, hiking, swimming, exploring the city, and more. You might be wondering, how in the world can anyone dress fashionably for crazy outdoor activities like that? I am here to answer that for you on the blog today, with my ultimate travel style guide: what to wear in Iceland!
There are 10 items of clothing that are absolute must-haves to pack on your trip that I have outlined for you below, including my top picks in each category and how to style them.
SWIMSUIT
Don’t think I am crazy for adding a swimsuit for a freezing cold climate! Bringing a swimsuit is an absolute MUST for the Blue Lagoon, which was my favorite part of the trip. I would recommend a one-piece for a little extra coverage and warmth.
WARM PANTS
For cold weather locations, I always pack simple pants layers. Leggings that are warm and stylish are necessary–check out athleisure sites like Lululemon or Athlete for great quality and stylish options. You can also opt for skinny jeans, I recommend layering with leg warmers. However my top suggestion is leather pants! They are warm and can be dressed down or dressed up for evening.
LONG SLEEVE TEES
Another absolute must is long sleeve tees. You will want to wear one under every outfit as an extra warm layer for your core, plus they can make a cute layering piece! I love tees with extra long sleeves and thumbholes so you can layer them under sweaters and have a cute color or design peeking out.
SWEATER
Another layering piece I brought is an exciting sweater. It goes well with anything and can be worn by day with leggings, hiking boots, and a puffer; or by night, with skinny jeans, a leather jacket, and booties. Check out this blog post for more details on styling sweaters!
VEST
In such freezing weather like Iceland, it is so important to keep your core warm. The best way to do this is by layering with a vest, so your chest is most covered and warm! Not to mention, vests are super easy and chic to style–read all about my vest styling tips in this blog post.
LEATHER JACKET
You can’t forget to take a leather jacket anywhere you travel! A leather will look so chic under a puffer coat or over a graphic hoodie for day, or with skinny jeans and a blouse for night.
PUFFER COAT
I think this one goes without saying. A puffer coat is always the warmest style of coat you can get, and it looks great with snow pants and layered with other items. Luckily there are always hundreds of cute puffer options since they are so classic! On this trip I wore a cropped white puffer, but my favorite look is something metallic! It adds that cool, edgy, winter style factor.
HIKING BOOTS
When it comes to hiking boots, you have to prioritize comfort because you will be walking until you drop! Luckily you can have super comfortable hiking shoes/winter boots for a trip like this while still being fashionable. In Iceland I wore these great Coach booties with a cute pink detail and they felt like walking on clouds. Check out this blog post for the most stylish winter boots that are all also amazing options.
HATS
Hats are such an underrated accessory! They can really bring an outfit together while obviously keeping your ears and head nice and warm. I recommend a hat with stylish details like a pompom, or a fabulous color like this neon pink I am wearing.
BIG SCARF
Scarves are definitely underrated as well. A great big scarf is so easy to layer and adds instant chic factor to your look. Not to mention, I always use a big scarf as a blanket on the plane!
