Monochromatic outfits are all over the streets during fashion month, all over runways, and constantly worn with ease by fashion moguls around the world. Seeing a trend worn by the most fashionable of people can make it seem like an intimidating trend! I am here to let you in on a secret… it is actually one of the most effortless outfit ideas, and you’ve definitely already worn this trend. Think about it! On a lazy day, it’s easy to throw on an all black outfit because you know it matches and its a classic look. Boom, that’s monochromatic! Since you’ve already mastered the easiest look, I am here to share the most creative ways to style monochromatic outfits this spring. This trend is for everybody, so let’s dive in!
WHAT IS MONOCHROMATIC?
Monochromatic if you break it down, means “single-color”. So, a monochromatic outfit is made up of pieces of the same color family. That’s right, I said the whole color family! It doesn’t have to mean an outfit with the same shade of cherry red in every piece. For example, you can wear a maroon skirt, cherry red top, pink shoes, and burgundy bag… a variety of shades of red makes a beautiful, interesting look. If you’re a monochromatic beginner, find a few different pieces of your favorite color in your closet and try blending the styles into a chic outfit.
HEAD-TO-TOE
The most important part of a monochromatic outfit is that it is consistently one color, from head-to-toe! This means top, bottom, shoes, bag, and accessories like earrings or sunglasses.
ADD A POP OF COLOR
Once you have a full look, then you can play around with it! My favorite way to add fun to these outfits is with a pop of color, like this huge blue bag from Coach! I just love the contrast that emphasizes the clean white look and lets the center piece shine.
FOCUS ON LAYERS
Even though monochromatic outfits are simple and made of one color, that doesn’t mean they have to be simple outfits! Focus on layering pieces to create some textures and dimension. In this all-white monochromatic outfit from Coach, I chose a blouse with a bow detail, high waisted shorts for playful silhouette, and a jacket for an extra element. I finished the look with simple white sneakers to keep it balanced!
ACCESSORIZE
Keep your monochromatic outfit fresh with a small accessory in a print. This small white bag keeps the whole look cohesive and sophisticated, but I couldn’t resist adding my favorite scarf trick. Take your favorite small, lightweight scarf (with a small print or color) and tie it around the bag handles. This simple accessory goes a long way for an effortless, high-fashion look!
Once you know the rules of making a monochromatic outfit, you can bend the rules with small pops of color and accessories. Now that you have all my tricks, I hope to see you rocking monochromatic outfits this spring and summer!
